About the Cooperative County Plan (CCP)
Introduction
Many challenges cities face today do not stop at their jurisdictional boundaries – economic development, air quality, and daily commutes are just a few topics that affect an entire region. The Cooperative County Plan unites five townships, 16 cities, and other areas of unincorporated Salt Lake County to identify, understand, and solve county-wide planning issues together.
The Vision
Created in June of 2008, the Cooperative County Plan is a multi-year project that is designed to focus on County-wide issues such as economic competitiveness, resource management, land use planning, and the environment.
The core vision of the Cooperative County Plan is to develop and provide the tools to aid local jurisdictions and unite land use planning within Salt Lake County, while still maintaining individuality within each city and township. Tools can be anything from data collection and management with an online GIS mapping system, to ordinance writing and land use modeling for 2040 and beyond.
Developing a Common Language
Cities worked together to have a county-wide map that matches the centerlines of streets. Specific land uses were set aside while the focus was put on areas of stability and areas of change to accommodate one of the fastest growing regions in the United States- while still preserving single-family neighborhoods, open space, and thriving areas.
Results
Through this process, we have already learned that joining together to solve problems allows us to produce results quickly and at a fraction of the cost we would all spend individually. In addition, the Cooperative County Plan has served as a forum and a vehicle in pursuit of federal grants to fund the very projects we define.
